Hi everyone. I have a problem that I can’t figure out. I searched online and this forum but can't find out what is going on. I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 and my fiancée just purchased a brand new iPhone 4 last night. We are using itunes 10 on a macbook pro. I have been having issues with voicemails and picture messages not being received so I decided to upgrade to 4.1 and also to upgrade her new phone as well. I currently have 4.0.1 on my phone and when I plugged it into itunes it said there was an update but only to 4.0.2. Confused I upgraded anyways hoping that after I would plug it in and find that it would let me go to 4.1. However itunes is telling me that 4.0.2 is the newest update. I then tried to plug her new phone that already has 4.0.2 on it to see what would happen and again itunes tells me that she has the newest update. I have done everything I can think of to fix this and can't find out why it is doing this.

Things I have done on both phones:

-Deleted itunes and reinstall. I'm new to a macbook so I dragged itunes to the trash and it seemed to get rid of everything.

-Hard reset both iPhones

-Erase all content and settings. Restored from backup which didn't work then restored to new iPhone

I'm not really sure what else to do. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Wow.. I don't know if I should feel sorry for you or not. You could have maybe looked up info on the 4.1 release before doing all that crap? I don't know maybe that seems too easy.

this HAS to be the OP's reaction after reading the first reply:

:p:p

Wow. You just. fmlanfg a . wow.
I don't know where to start. If you wanted to, you could have installed the 4.1 GM by downloading it from a website. BUT whyyyyy in the world did you delete iTunes.

You know what? So much fail that I have to, the game. That is all.

I don't see anything the OP did that a genius hasn't told me to do when troubleshooting problems. He didn't claim to be an expert, and he searched and must have see all the "I have 4.1" posts and thought it was available on iTunes. It seems to be an honest mistake and he came humbly looking for help. A little empathy goes a long way. Sheesh.

EDIT: Added "Payback is a bitch." photo.

a friend of mine who's not expert, she heard me talking about 4.1, she went to itunes, it wouldn't update, she went to the apple website where it says 4.1 coming September 8th, so obviously the person didn't think the obvious place to check before going to that effort was check the OFFICIAL website? no brainer....

I don't want to turn this into a argument, but my understanding is that apple.com in the UK reported iOS 4.1 as available 9/8, but "everywhere else" (which wasn't defined but I'm in the US) the site shows it as coming soon (see attached pic). Personally, when I see posts of people that have something and the official website says coming soon, I'll first go try to get it. If that fails, then more research is done. And that could include posting to the forum where people report that they have it. "Coming soon" on a website may mean the Marketing people went home before the Technical people that posted the file.

His request didn't justify the response, but thank goodness this thread isn't full of equally unhelpful "search first" responses, just "search harder". He made a mistake but did so gracefully and came here for help. I'm sure there are posts more deserving everyone's venom.

but surely coming soon on the website and iTunes telling him he had the latest version would have been the big hint that it's not out yet?? Coming soon on a website means not out yet. any sensible person would leave it at that then wait, or do more thorough research than just reinstalling itunes and that, any simple look at macrumors front page, or the iPhone section, would confirm that it's out next week........ excuse it all you want, but really if he put the effort into reinstalling and all that into a proper search first, would have been more sensible.

Just google iOS 4.1 gold master and you will find it all over the net. I already installed 4.1 GM and it works great. But if you want to install before 9/8, you will have to download and install the 4.1 GM version.

When 4.1 is officially released, will those of us with 4.1 GM have to upgrade to it, or is it the same thing so iTunes won't even mention it?

I agree it could have been done differently and better.

Ok well I have 4.1 (obviously). I've noticed something about the Messages app...When I switch back to it via multitasking, it does a blank screen then the messages pop up. Like it is restarting the app instead of picking up where it left off. Did 4.0.2 do this? I seem to remember it coming right back where you left off like the phone app or notes or whatever.

I just did a swap between messages an settings and I get the blank screen as described too... maybe they messed up somethin in 4.1?

I just tried in 4.0.2 and it didn't do what you describe. Must be something wonk with 4.1 or your phone (though the next post after yours reports the same behavior as you).
