In our house we had been using a D-link router with WEP encryption. We live in a city area so WEP really wasn't very safe, but higher encryption wouldn't work correctly. We used my iMac connected wireless to the d-link router to stream movies and music to my macbook, hooked up to our tv. Sort of like a ghetto AppleTV. The router also tended to just drop the connection, stopping our movies short right in the middle.

This led to the purchase of a Linksys WRT54GSX4 with SRX400 router. I wanted to run a more secure network, and not have it drop it while we're watching movies and things. Now! The setup remains the same. Imac connected wirelessly to the linksys router, streaming to the macbook. However, the iMac doesn't seem to want to stay connected correctly. The connection doesn't all out drop, but the signal strength is not great when the router is right down the hall, probably about 20 feet. I've tried changing security levels (wep, wpa, wpa2, none at all) and its still not right.

The main problem is that iTunes won't stream movies anymore. Sometimes it works. Most of the time it does not. It'd be nice if there was some consistency! Does anyone have a clue?!?!

Also. The macbook has no problems. The connection is always better from even further distances. iMac is 20" Core Duo. First gen intel.

Some more research into my problem. The Macbook and the iMac have different airport cards. The macbook firmware is listed as : 0.1.31.1. The iMac's is listed as broadcom bcm43xx. This broadcam card seems to be the problem. Not the Linksys, as every other computer has no problem.

When the iMac first connects it works fine. But then after a bit, it dies. Its transfer rate plummets, and I can no longer stream movies.
