iPod touch iTunes won't shut up

Hi folks. I like to use my itouch to listen to streaming radio. When I'm waiting for a stream, i.e., when the itouch is buffering, whichever tune I happened to last play in iTunes comes on. It stops when the radio stream arrives, but if there's further buffering (I have lousy bandwidth), the iTunes tune comes roaring back, at twice the volume of the stream.

How can I shut off iTunes so this doesn't happen?
