iTunes – x downloads available

In iTunes, I see a message saying X downloads available. These are all apps which are at least 500MB or so in size and I do not want to download them; however, every time I go to download some other app on sale, all these available downloads automatically resume.

How can I delete them so they are not downloading? I selected all and pressed delete and they vanished but they come back.
