I think I'm going to do the iPhone Upgrade Program for the first time this year when I buy the new iPhone X. I understand how the program works, but I'm not sure how the procedure to join works when you preorder the phone from Apple's Store app?

I will be using my current iPhone 7 Plus and/or my iPad to place my preorder (depending on which one brings up the app online first). When I select the iPhone I want to preorder, how does joining the iUP work?

If I understand it correctly, you still need to have a carrier account in order to buy the phone this way, right? You can't just order an unlocked phone without putting in carrier information, right?

So when you enter your carrier account info, I assume it just checks to see if you have an account, right? It wouldn't need to check whether you have a current contract or installment plan since this will be done through Apple (Citizens Bank). So do they just make you enter carrier info so you don't just buy phones and scalp them?

Once you enter carrier info, then I assume it takes you to some kind of financing page where you have to enter SSN etc to do a credit check with Citizens? The last couple of years, did this go smoothly for those who were signing up for iUP for the first time? I know there were some issues for upgraders last year, but I am concerned about the credit check and bank load setup process and whether that will either 1) slow down my order quite a bit, making the ship date later, or 2) whether the credit check site will go down and I'll be stuck in the middle of the order.

And this is the only way to buy an unlocked iPhone at launch, right? (Assuming I don't have a VZW account since that version comes unlocked). I want to buy it unlocked and use it on AT&T for a while but then switch to a different GSM provider. I assume I will have to activate it with AT&T first and then just pop in the SIM from my other GSM carrier?

Thanks.
