So, I ordered my new iPhone 16 Pro Max online, and decided I'd return the old 15PM at the Apple Store near me. I brought it in, and they scanned the serial number and said they can take it, but it *wouldn't* close the loan. They'd just give me $650 for the "trade in" and I'd need to pay off the $850 loan myself.

They told me that once they ship the return kit, that they can't take the return at the store.

I swear I've read on here that others have done the exact same thing, without any issues. How??

i just returned my old 15 PM today and they gave me both options i could either get 650$ back and not close the loan or i can close the loan and not pay anything so they can do that in store you just got an uninformed employee.

I saw the screen on their iPhone… the close loan option wasn’t available. Only the $650 back option.

Yup. I had that same experience last year when i gave in my 14 Pro Max for the 15 PM, Uninformed employee. Gave me $650 back and kept the loan intact instead of doing the cancel.

I swore i'd never do IUP trade in store and go back to shipping the phone.

Sure they are eligible but the key question is did your Apple in-store employee attempt to process your IUP return correctly or have you actually made 12 payments on your iPhone 15 PM before you went into the Apple Store.

Dave
The screen showed two options. One had a yellow warning symbol and was greyed out, the "close the loan" option. The other option was the $650 nonsense. That option was available to use.

Even had one of their team leads try and had the same issue.

Just dropped my 15 off at apple in Trumbull, employee was confused but I saw payoff loan option and told him to pick that instead og low trade in value. He asked another employee and she asked me which phone I wanted to trade in for, showed her my 16 explained that every year I do IUP I would get kit in mail to send back fedex but this I did in store pick up and was told by apple chat that I HAD to drop it off, only choice. Employees not what they used to be and/or poor training.
