and it's been good in terms of the proximity sensor. My question is when the release if finally out to the public what will I need/have to do to get the public release thru iTunes? Can I just click UPDATE?

1) USB cable
2) Iphone4
3) copy of itunes installed.

assuming that you're using the GM from the Apple developer's program, you don't need to update. it's the same code as what will be released tomorrow.

theirs no reason to update to the public version.. 4.1GM is the exact same version that will be released tomorrow. which is why its called the gold mastered.. You just was able to get it early.. And also thats why if you were able to obtain a copy of 4.1GM and wasnt a developer it would activate even if you werent a developer..

That's not always true.

4.0GM was pushed out with Game Center (for developers most likely)
4.0 general release did not have game center

I also believe Apple dropped an updated baseband into a general release firmware version this year between the GM version and public release, but I cannot remember for sure what version it was.

True on all counts.

P.S. Can't wait for the JB to come out for 4.1.
