Here's the short and sweet.

A few years ago I introduced my mother-in-law to the joys of iPhoto and digital pictures. Little did I know she'd like it so much she'd go around to every relative she knew and scan all of their pics, to the point that she now has 20,000 pics, literally.

She has a 700 Mhz, G4 iMac, with maxed RAM, running iPhoto '05. When she opens iPhoto, needless to say, the computer has trouble. Sometimes it will be real slow or even freeze.

A new computer isn't possible. More RAM, obviously, isn't possible. iPhoto '06 is, but will it make a huge amount of difference?

I've heard of programs that would let her only open part of her iPhoto library at a time. Do they work?

Any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Yes, it would make a lot of difference. The database is much improved.

Yes, but they detract from the ease of use. Now you have to remember what library has what stuff, and it will get messy if you want to work with a set of photos that aren't all in the same library.

your mother-in-law is mad! send her to my place so she can scan all my cd's and dvd's into delicious library... :)

reccommend iPhoto 06 upgrade too...

I hope all of you suggesting iPhoto '06 realize what you're doing. I sense a massive Photocast coming on...

LOL OMG I just got a mental picture of me trying to explain photocasting to her.
What's to explain? Create an album, hit the button. She'll find it on her own... ;)

My experience was that iPhoto '06 really is a lot faster than iPhoto '05 just like Steve Jobs said. It's not going to be as big of an upgrade as a new Mac would be, but it'll almost certainly help. Just make sure you or she backs up the library before upgrading just in case.
