Are you saying that the telephoto camera is just a placeholder? I really REALLY doubt that.

On the other hand, depending on conditions, I have read that on phones like the X if there isn't enough light for the telephoto lens, it may just use the main lens and digitally zoom. Some calculation that the picture will turn out better that way.

yeah I doubt it too. maybe it's the second thing you mention that I heard about.

This is not true. Now if you use the digital zoom on any phone that is what the zoom is doing btw.

Not true. Just put your finger over the camera and you can see it covers it. If it was just cropping the normal image it would be easily determinable from that test alone.

In certain light conditions it does. Definitely in night mode. Whenever it determines that a cropped image from the superior Wide camera would be better quality than the slower Telephoto camera.

It does happen from time to time, depending on lighting conditions.

There are times where you can get a higher quality photo by cropping the wide sensor than you could by using the telephoto sensor. This is due to the difference in aperture and resulting ability to use lower ISO.

This is more likely to happen in low light situations.

That is exactly what tests have confirmed under certain circumstances. Whether the iPhone chooses a digital zoom or optical zoom depends on lighting conditions and focus distance.

This is my understanding also but the OP seemed to be stating it was every time. I have not had my Pro do it yet though

Yeah I wasn't aware of that and I thought he was talking about it always doing it. My bad.

is that true? I hope not.
False.
It depends on light conditions and distance of the subject from the phone.
In low light or if the subject is too near, than the 2X sensor is deactivated.

Does that mean the 2x lens have less aperture then the normal lense?
It is clearly stated on Apple website.
And this is quite normal.
Normal lens is F/1.8, while the telephoto is F/2.0
