I am creating a site using iweb, and finally everything is starting to look good. Here is my page:

http://web.mac.com/johnholden123/Extraordinary_Healing/Home.html

While I have broadband, I had a friend with 56k dialup open my page- it took him 1 minute to open my very simple home page!! Since this site is for my business, I want everyone to have access to it. I just found this on the web:

http://www.ragesw.com/products/optimize-web-sites.html

which is a speed optimizer that works for iweb, and other programs. Before I try it, can anyone offer me advice on how to make my page load more quickly? I know I can make my header image a smaller size, but this is minimal compared to the extra/unnecasary code that iweb includes in my page.

JohnnyBgood,

If your website takes 1 minute to load on dial-up, then your page definitely could use some optimization. The more images you have on the home page the slower it will be so keep that in mind. Also, you should check the file size of your images and try and make them as small as possible, even 400kb is too big for an image...

I'm also going to assume you do not have any other dynamic content such as flash on your home page?? If so, take the flash video off.

That looks like a very basic page...I would make your header smaller for sure but this will improve the load time slightly.

If it takes a full minute or so to load this page on someones dial-up connection there isn't much you are going to be able to do.

I ran a web page speed analysis at:

http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/index.html

It shows that the page is 197k big, which seems ridiculous for this simple page. Is there nothing I can do? I imagine that everyone using iweb would have this same trouble?

Actually I'm not surprised...iWeb is easy to use but it comes with a caveat...the templates aren't that great and have a lot of overhead...

You may want to try some other templates

Thanks, So I need to download a basic template to use- how do I get it into iweb?

iWeb generates a couple of Javascript files that hold all the routines it uses, which is what's taking up most of that space. The web pages themselves are not really any bigger than you'd expect. These files are used by all your site's pages though, so once the files are loaded into the browser's cache, each subsequent page will load much faster. (Well, until they fall out of the cache and have to be reloaded, of course.)
