Jailbreak and Unlock 1st Gen iPhone on 1.1.4

ok im looking at this walkthrough iClarified tutorial

what i want to know is do i have to upgrade to 3.0 first? or do i leave the phone in 1.1.4 and do the redsnow and restore and everything the tutorial tells me?

• Backup your phone
  
• Put it into DFU mode and let iTunes update it to 3.0. (DFU like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofpinyGlQ8I)
  
• Run RedSn0w
  
• Restore from your backup
