Go to Settings -> General -> About and check "Model". If it starts with MC, then you can't jailbreak yet. But if it's not, then you can jailbreak using the redsn0w beta for iOS4.

There is only a tethered jailbreak available for the 3rd gen iPod touch at this time.

I tried redsn0w beta on Mac and windows and it just says failed to regonize .ipsw
