Jailbreak iphone 3g, 4.1 - should i update to 4.3?

I'm going to Italy in May and want to use my iPhone 3g, 4.1 bb 5.14.02 while I'm there.

I'm new at this but from all the reading I've done, if I jailbreak then use tiny umbrella, I can then find out what bootloader I'm on. If I'm on 5.8 then I can unlock easy and use GPS. If I'm on 5.9 then no such luck and GPS will be gone if I go up to iPad bb.

Is this right?

I'm trying to jailbreak via iclarified but their download link for redsn0w doesn't work for iphone 3g, 4.1.

Do you think I should update to 4.3??

Latest firmware for 3G is 4.2.1.

Used redsn0w 0.9.6b6 to jailbreak your phone!

I'm having a hard time finding redsn0w 0.9.6b6. Do you know if redsn0w 0.9.6 RC 12 will do the job?

Also, while I'm jailbreaking, if I don't upgrade my baseband to ipad version, can I do it later? I want to use tiny umbrella first to find out about my bootloader first..

once you jailbreak, you can also install Fuzzyband from Cydia, it will give you bootloader information as well. Also, you can install Ipad baseband later if you want to. you don't need to do it at this time. It is up to you.

I've been on that page but if you try to download the redsn0w link, it doesn't work. Is it just me? Or does the link not work for you as well?

Thank you all for your help. Successfully jailbroke my phone.

Unfortunately, via Fuzzyband my bootloader is 5.9 so unlocking my phone would ruin my GPS. Damn it!!

If anybody knows if there is a fix for the GPS, please please tell me!! I really need to use it during my travels by May 7. Please!
