Jailbreak not Avaiable? and confused with unlock

I just came back from the apple store with my brand new refurbed 3G and i want to upgrade to 4.0 but the problem is how can i jailbreak?

i need to jailbreak to hacktivate and unlock but for now im going to jailbreak my 3.1.3
