As long as the 3G sim is from the phone carrier, leave it in during restore/jailbreak, it will activate the phone (even if the account isn't active)

Nope, they dont charge you anything or do anything to your account.
All deactivated sims will still get you past the connect to itunes screen and activate and let you into the homescreen.
It just takes a few seconds and activates the iphone officially. Its alot better than hactivating it without a sim and losing push and youtube and having to bother with applying pushfixes etc...

I'm in the same boat as OP.
have a 3G and upgrading to an iPhone 4 next week.
need to sell the 3G to offset some of the 4 costs.
big selling point for 3G will be it's unlocking and jailbreaking capability.
so, when I sell it on ebay, what steps should I take to protect myself?

step #1) backup all info from phone to iTunes.
step #2) restore 3g phone to factory default?
step #3) leave 3G AT&T sim card as is in the phone and ship it out?

that's it?

thanks much!

1 yes
2 yes
3 activate it with your official AT&T sim but dont send it out with the phone.
JB it with redsnow and unlock it with ultrasnow thru cydia.

This did not work for me. I also upgraded to an iPhone 4 and wanted to sell my 3G. After getting my new iPhone I upgraded the 3G to 4.01, jailbreak with redsnow, unlocked with ultraslow. My phone would not activate with my old sim. I had to borrow a friend of mine's active 3G sim to activate.

Mine did with an old unactivated AT&T sim I had sitting around for years.
After you restored thru itunes you let the old simcard in and plugged in the iphone to itunes and let it load right?
It didnt get you past the emergency call screen and into the homescreen?
I dont know what you did but it does work.

If you did this in the order you typed this, you did it backwards.

Leave sim in while restoring/jailbreaking, don't select hacktivate, run Ultrasnow, take sim out.
