I want my iphone4 unlocked to use on a different carrier and jailbroken.

I looked on youtube and it is all very confusing.

Where do I start? Can someone lead me on this?

If you have baseband 4.11.8 or higher you won't be able to unlock it with a software unlock. You need to buy an unlocked phone.

Is the baseband the same thing as modem firmware? Iphone says firmware 04.11.08.

Why wouldnt I be able to unlock it? Any exceptions?

Sell it buy one that can be unlocked or factory unlocked. Don't complain because you didn't do reserch before you bought it.

In the Uk I can contact the carrier and pay a small fee to have the phone unlocked to all networks.

Simple and cheap.

Cant you do this ?

What carrier are you with? That might help.

The phone cant be used. Its one someone elses contract.

The phone usually not locked to the contract, just to the carrier.

So anyone with the same carrier can put in here own sim and use it.

Nope not with a baseband of 4.11.8.

The Baseband has nothing to do with paying a carrier to unlock it.

Locking is done by the IMEI number. Apple has a database of which phone are locked or unlocked, that is what is being checked when connecting to itunes.

Paying a carrier to unlock means they pass on the info to apple which than takes it out of the database.

But not everywhere is that possible. Depends on local law and agreements with apple.

The phone is locked to Bell.

I had it in the Bell store today. The phone is useless because it is stuck on a contract with Bell.
The phone is in the garbage as we speak.

The phone is locked to Bell and I am pretty darn sure someone is using Bell and wants an iPhone. That person will and can use that iPhone.

If the carrier does an unlock for you then it doesn't matter what baseband it is.

If you don't know anything then don't assume something. If you don't do your research then you deserve it.

Am i assuming correctly that in america its harder or even not possible to obtain the unlock code by paying a fee ?

Slightly off topic but I was reading the other day that some usa networks charge a person to receive incoming calls and texts !

If so I'm kinda glad i reside in the Uk !

Hope you get a resolution.
