Sorry for the newbie question, but i'm in the market for an iPhone and I would just like to know what does jailbreaking an iPhone exactly provide you besides installing 3rd party applications?

I am just trying to find out if it will be necessary to jailbreak once the new iPhone SDK supported version is released.
