Rather than waste your time on this forum with this very remedial question, I was hoping that someone might point me to a link/resource for follow-up.

As it pertains to the iPad, what is involved to jailbreak the device & what options does this open up? Thank you for your patience.

Sorry not enough info here...

At the moment iOS 4.3 has just been released. This means that Apple has quit approving all previous iOS versions. If you have never jail broken before, and you have never saved SHSH blobs you will not be able to return to what you have now, most likely.

Step one is download tinyumberla and run this on your computer, this will save SHSH blobs for iOS 4.3 and permit you to come back to it.

Next is to understand the difference between a tether and untethered jail break, google the terms....
 
Greenpoison can jailbreak 4.2.1 firmware on the ipad. 4.3, wait for a reliable method from the dev team.
