Jailbreaking an Iphone 3G

The more I read about how to unlock an Iphone 3G the more I'm confused

I'm sure this is posted a hundred times and I'm just not grasping the concept but what are the steps to jailbreaking an Iphone 3g

version 4.2.1
firmware 05.15.04

Jailbreak yes but you won't be able to unlock it unless you apply the iPad baseband

I know you're a newbie but here's a helpful tip for when posting on these forums:

"Version" is actually referred to as Firmware, and "Modem Firmware" is referred to as baseband.

After you have jailbroken the phone do you then go back into Itunes to restore from your last back up to access the apps you have already purchased?

Worth to run Tiny umbrella to see what boot loader you have before going the Ipad baseband. If your phone has 05.08 boot loader, you can downgrade it to the lower baseband with fuzzyband.

Thanks for the help was able to get it jailbroke this weekend! After having issues with Winterboard and have to re-jailbrake it the then deciding that multitasking was asking too much out of my 3G and re-jailbreaking it for a 3rd time I feel like an expert lol ...
