Jailbreaking erases the baseband?

If I were to jailbreak my Iphone 3G running 4.2.1 I would lose the baseband and not be able to unlock the phone?
 
The only thing that affects baseband, AFAIK, is updating firmware. Jailbreaking unlocks the restrictions Apple places on iOS, it does nothing to your baseband.
