I heard it is illegal in the US now which sucks super hard... Anyone know if my iPad is exempt if I bought it before the ruling (I got it 9/20/2012; the ruling was made 10/28/2012). And does anyone know the potential penalties if I decided to jailbreak my iPad?

Its illegal on a technicality...but nonetheless, there are TONS of people who have jailbroken their iPads, myself included. We'll let you know when we get fined :p.

I'm assuming if one were to be caught, it would be a civil suit between Apple and the user. I'd also assume that Apple wouldn't do this because they'd want to keep up their customer relations. Just inquiring before I decide to do anything. Thanks.

I highly doubt Apple would take legal action of ANY sort. I think the very best they would do is void your warranty for the device. It would take Apple a LONG time to deal with the amount of people who jailbreak.

Jailbreaking is not illegal, unlocking is.
