So I understand I should be able to use bluetooth in my iPhone 4S to accomplish 3G websurfing on either my MBP or iPad I. I think Verizon charges $20 a month for the pleasure, which is less expensive than paying $25 a month to get 2gb of data on my iPad.

Question I -- Does this tethering work well?

When I was looking around about tethering, I kept seeing posts/websites discussing jailbreaking. What is jailbreaking? If I jailbreak an iPhone (I understand that this can't be done yet for a 4S), does that mean I get free 3g service? free tethering?

There is no jailbreak for 4S yet
When the A5 device jailbreak does come out, you can purchase a tethering app from Cydia and use it as a mobile hotspot for your laptops, iPad, iPod

You cannot get free data service, you have to buy a data plan if you want to be able to use your phone away from Wifi

Meanwhile, use Google to read up on jailbreaking, there is a lot of information already posted.
No need for me to retype it.
