I just got my 3GS swapped at Apple and it's at the no sim insert sim for activation. I read Spirit requires an activated phone, can I use Pwnage tool or insert an old sim and Spirit, then through Cydia do the ultrasnow unlock? Which method would you all suggest? Thanks

If it's running iOS 4.0 then it has the newest baseband and that is a negative. At least not until they come out with something for the newest baseband.

Which version then 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 because I was under the impression the latter has not been jail broke.

Correct. I have a new 3GS also running 4.0 and I am stuck till a jailbreak is released for 4.0 + new baseband.

I'm afraid you're all wrong. I jailbroke and unlocked on 3.1.3 then decided I wanted 4.0, redid on 4.0 with a JB and unlock no problem. It can be done.

How?
I got my wife a 3GS, and it was JB / Unlocked, but it locked up and told her to restore, so she did.
Now I"ve got a phone stuck on "insert SIM card"...
I can't activate it. I'm not sure if it would have gone to 3.1.3 when it restored.

Is there an easy way to re-unlock it / JB? I'd even like to go to 4.0 if possible

I posted what I did because I was thinking since this was a new 3GS that it came with 4.0 installed and not 3.1.3. Yes a phone with 3.1.3 can be jailbroken but not a new 3GS with 4.0.

My new 3GS came with 4.0 and so of course it can't be jailbroken yet nor can it be downgraded to 3.1.3.
