iPod touch jailbreatouch 2g firmware 2.2.1

I have a 32 GB touch 2G model running 2.2.1 firmware.I want to jailbreak it.I only have the option to upgrade to 4.0.Should i jailbreak 2.2.1 and then upgrade to 4 or vice versa.
how do i save the ecid SSH on the 2.2.1 ?Can i downgrade to 2.2.1 if i am not happy with 4.0
Which tool should i use to jailbreak Spirit or redsnow.
I am using Windows 7
