Jailbroken 3G to OS 3.0

I'm confused....

I have a jailbroken 3G phone and want to upgrade to OS 3.0 tomorrow. Should I do a factory restore via iTunes first or can I simply upgrade to 3.0? I read somewhere that without a factory restore you lose approx. half a gig. of space?

Put the device into DFU Mode and do a restore in iTunes. That will do the most thorough job.
