Jailbroken 3GS 3.1.2 to Jailbroken 4.0 Pwnage

I have a 3GS on 3.1.2 jailbroken with pwnage. I want to go to jailbroken 4.0. Using pwnage 4.01, can I create the custom ipsw and restore the phone with it or do I have to upgrade to standard 4.0 first? Thanks.

Restore to the custom IPSW. If you upgrade to the official first, you'll be stuck either having to downgrade and re-JB, or if you have no SHSH saved, stuck on official firmware until a new JB is released.

****, ok I have my SHSH blob. Go back to 3.1.2, re-jailbreak that using non-spirit methods, and then try to restore custom firmware. Is that the trick?
