So.... my (old) 3GS had been stuttering when receiving messages (the vibration and sound would stutter, sounding multiple times), so tonight I decided to turn it off and back on, using the power button (as normal). When it booted back up, it went straight to the connect to iTunes screen.

Now, because it's jailbroken (pre week 40, 5.0.1), I can't just go and rejailbreak it, can I?

Also, I replaced my MBP's hard drive in January and I haven't been syncing with iTunes (therefore, no backups).

Any ideas on what my options are? Has the phone finally crapped out?

Should this be moved over to the iOS/jailbreaking section?

Well, I think the phone might be toast, or maybe it'll take more work than I'm willing to put into it. I tried restoring using iTunes (which downloaded and updated it from 5.0.1 to 6.1.3), but after applying the new firmware to the phone and restarting, the phone just went back to the "Connect to iTunes" screen. I'm really not sure what to do now.

April 11... I tried to restore the phone via iTunes again and it worked! I have no idea what happened, because I didn't do anything differently from when I first tried to restore it (and it failed). The funny thing is, after losing my jailbreak, the home button seems much more responsive and the phone in general feels more responsive. I definitely wasn't expecting that, moving from iOS 5.x to 6.x.
