Hi, I'll be visiting Japan a lot from the next year (2013) for about two years. I've been looking around for cheap prepaid sims, but through research I learned that there's no way of BUYING a sim card, you must buy it with the phone.

I'm aware that it is possible to rent a sim card, however the prices are too high and I'd rather stick with just one sim card.

SO, I came up with the idea of buying the cheapest Japanese phone and then cutting the sim card into a micro sim, as you do, and then moving it into my iPhone.

MY QUESTION BEING:
Would this work?

Thanks in advance!

PS - also, are there any pay as you go plans with unlimited data? :D Or credit that lasts for a month or so with unlimited data?

AFAIK, SoftBank is probably the best carrier in Japan for iPhone SIMs. I have no idea about NTT, but KDDI is a CDMA carrier.

They do have unlimited data rentals at ¥1,500/day, but since you're staying for 2 years its definitely not worth it.
