Hi,

I've done something I probably shouldn't have i.e. I tried to install Java 7 (oracle JDK 7) on 10.6.8.
It didn't work.

So I've tried to uninstall it following these instructions:
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/install/mac/mac-jdk.html#uninstall
And I've tried to reactivate java 6 by entering the commands on this page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559?viewlocale=fr_FR&locale=fr_FR
Then I've found somewhere that
JavaAppletPlugin.plugin. had to be removed so I did.

Anyway, complete disaster. Java doesn't work. Java pref won't launch.

I'm totally stuck. Is there anyway to "reset" java 6 and reinstall it?
When I downloaded JavaForMacOSX10.6, a message came up saying that a more recent version was already installed...

You have to remove OS X's "memory" of Java SE 7. To do that, you must locate the Receipts folder, find com.oracle.java packages, and delete them. Where said folder is on 10.6.8, though, I do not remember...

And is it possible to do some kind of repair from the install disk?

I believe if you reinstall the OS over top of the existing install that will remove all Java installs. Then try to launch something that needs Java and you should be prompted to install Java 6.

This will not erase your data, but do a backup first just to be safe.

Make SURE you use the COMBO updater if you do this.
