Java plugin causing problems in Firefox?

When I enable the Java plugin for firefox it just goes crazy (locks up, freezes, etc...). I've updated Java but it looks like the plugin remains outdated. Any ideas? How do I uninstall the java plugin for the browser and reinstall the latest version? When I go into addons I can disable but not able to uninstall. The java website also says the plugin is outdated but no way to update.

Software update has no updates, it does update Java but not the Firefox plugin.

Is your Firefox up to date? Check for updates first.

Probably more effective: you could uninstall Firefox, then re install. It should ask you if you want to keep extensions.
