I'm currently abroad, and using a 3 sim in my unlocked JB iphone 3Gs. All is going well, except the phone itself is having issues (battery dropping suddenly, then the phone shutting off).
If I need to restore etc... what are my options? Will I maintain the unlock?

You only option to keep that unlock is to restore with custom firmware. The preferred route is pwnage tool for mac. You must have SHSH to use anything other than latest firmware. Alternative is snowbreeze for windows.

Thanks much for the reply. Can I "jump up" from 4.0 to 4.3 with pwnage? It's been ages (since 4.0) since I played around with this particular phone and pwnage.

Yes, you should be able to upgrade your firmware through pwnagetool.
