Like it says. I don't want to lose the GPS by going to the iPad baseband. Is there any other options for unlocking? The last threads I could find about it were before iOS 5 and the subsequent exploits were released, so I'm wondering if I can update to iOS 5.0.1 and unlock?

JB 3GS on 4.1 FW, 05.14.02 baseband, 6.4 bootloader - Can I unlock?

No, I think ipad BB is your only choice. ultrasnow only works for 5.13 and below.
If your ultimate goal is to have your phone with 5.0.1 and unlock it. Then your steps above are more complicate because you have to build customs 5.0.1 firmware. So, just do this;
1. Upgrade your phone to stock 5.0.1
2. Jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.9.10b4.
3. Install Ipad baseband with 0.9.10b4
4. Install ultrasn0w from Cydia.
5. Reboot your phone.
The reason to separate 2 & 3 out because there are reports that if you do that together, redsn0w might crash.
Also, if you use with T-Mobile sim, then disable 3G for it to work.
I got a message saying "the device isn't eligible for the requested build." Do I have to use TinyUmbrella?
I've tried everything I can think of and I'm still getting the "ineligible" error. I've double checked the hosts file, tried using tinyumbrella and not, tried a Reset to Factory Settings on the phone (which got it stuck at the apple logo with a loading circle)...ideas?
This error generally pops up if you do not put your device into DFU mode properly.
I believe you can remedy the boot loop by using the "Just Boot" action in Redsn0w. After that make sure you follow the steps to put your device into DFU properly.
If the Redsn0w method does not work, then try using TinyUmbrella and select "Fix Recovery".

Damn it, I changed my hosts file incorrectly. I thought the 74.xxx.xxx.xxx line was apple's legit server, so I left that uncommented. *facepalm* Following Crystal's instructions now, on the last redsnow step. Thanks for the help!
Stuck again. I'm on 5.0.1 JB, but I can't upload the iPad baseband. redsnow runs fine, but I get an error on the phone saying "no successful firmware download after 60000 ms!! Giving up..." then it stops. What's going on? I've googled, but all the responses I've found aren't helpful.
