Hi, I have an iphone 3GS 3.1.2 I it was jailbroken with Spirit to 3.1.3 firmware and now I would like to update it to 4.1 firmware but don't know how to do that:/ Can I update my iphone without using itunes? I am running on Windows Vista. Also my husband has an ipod touch 3rd gen and it's jailbroken with spirit also to 3.1.3...is it the same for that too? I would also like to rejailbreak both after updating. Please someone help me??!

Look in Cydia on both the iPhone and iPod, on top of the screen should say, "SHSH: x.x.x,....."
If you don't need the unlock for the 3GS, just update the iPhone to 4.2.1 and jailbreak with Redsn0w. Same with the iPod.
You don't have the shsh files saved then. You can only upgrade to 4.2.1. Apple stops signing the previous iOS after they come out with another. So upgrading to an older iOS is impossible without the shsh files saved.
As long as you have back ups of the iPhone and iPod you'll be fine. Yes, jailbreak after the update.
iTunes. Before you update/jailbreak your iPod and iPhone know that new 4.2.1 jailbreak is tethered.
Tethered meaning every time that your device needs to be rebooted, you turn it off/on or the battery dies, you the Redsn0w to turn the device back on.
Within a few weeks. Comex (creator of Spirt/jailbreakme) is busy working on an untethered version.
Apple stops signing 4.1 on their servers, so you can't restore. Apple does this with every firmware. They release a new version and stop signing the old one.
That's why the shsh blobs are needed.
It means you dont have any shsh's saved so far and that you first request is pending so you will eventually get 4.2.1 shsh's and higher.
You will not be able to restore your iphone to anything but 4.2.1 and higher firmware builts.
