i don't want to do this jb (i'd rather stay on 3.0) but i got my phone replaced by apple and it came with 3.1.2, SIGH.

so my only options are blackra1n / pwnage tool am i correct?
(i have access to both windows and mac)

please allow me to ask a few questions on this.

1) Heard about battery drain issues - how accurate is this? if i use pwnage tool would this be any better?

2) Any hopes for iphonedevteam to develop redsn0w for 3.1.2 jb? i have been using redsn0w all along and it works like a charm.. would prefer sticking to it since i have never used the pwnage tool stuff.

3) Any special points to be aware of whilst doing this 3.1.2 jailbreak?

thank you so much and your comments and help is greatly appreciated... thanks in advance. :) x

I would use pwnage tool since it gives you more options under expert mode. And also I would check to see if the upgraded baseband from the 3.1.2 firmware is compatible with the 3.0 firmware.

3.0? I thought I will have to jb to 3.1.2 now as it is already the built in firmware on my phone now... So what has it got anything to do with a 3.0 firmwre compatabiliy? Sorry I might have misunderstood but I am not really good at these.... :/

is it stable enough to jb though? I hve heard so many issues with 3.1.2 jb phones I am kind of worried but then again I don't really have an option now...

When asked by iTunes to restore to backup or set up as new, I recommend choosing set up as new. You will loose all your settings, but it is a cleaner, less problematic JB.

There is no guarantee that your battery life won't suffer.

If you have an issue with the battery, just restore to official Apple 3.1.2, then re-JB.

Since your phone is already there, you have nothing to loose.

right now im still on jb 3.0.1 and running the 5.1 carrier hack file. its been running good so far. if i want to upgrade and jb 3.1.2, is the easiest way to update via itunes and then jb with blackra1n? i dont need to unlock. and what happens to all the jb apps? does it just disappear?

Yea, they get overwritten by the new firmware. There is an app called PkgBackup ($2 or $3) which works great to restore all your Cydia repos and apps after update and re-JB.

My battery since i upgraded to 3.1.2 is ridiculously better. I have a 2G and was using ActivateMMS2G in Cydia and cant with this version so i dont know if that is the reason or not. However, i turn my phone off every night and turn it back on around 5:30 am-5:45am and before it was somwhere in the 40's...maybe in the low 50's when i got home @ 3pm.

It is 6:37 pm and i am at 76%

Went down to 74% after texting and uploading this picture.

i bought the pkgbackup and it didnt back up my cydia apps..

i downloaded when i was on 3.0.1, ran the app then hit the backup button, sync'd the phone to itunes as instructed by the app. then i update to 3.1.2. jb with blackra1n. download pkgbackup again, and tried to do the restore and it didnt work. am i missing something?

thanks for all the replies guys! (i know i have been away for a while)
for the past 2 days i actually managed to jailbroke my newly replaced iphone to 3.1.2 using pwnage tool. (don't know why i am still so skeptical about blackra1n...)

and phew. i was worried! as my newly replaced phone actually has an iboot number of 359.3 .... just a bit off the latest batch359.3.2!
thank god i was still able to jb.. or else i'd cry ;-;

anyway thanks for your help guys.
my battery seems to be doing alright so far.
(i set up my phone as new... though its really troublesome)

What is the difference between a phone jailbreaked with Blackrain vs Pwned? Is the end result not the same?

I ask because Pwned didn't work for me so I used blackrain.

I have no issues with the result. It works well. Battery life is no different to before.

anyone else haveing problems with blackra1n? i have restored my phone as new no luck, from a back up no luck, with out syncing, and after syncing and just cant get it to work.

Well it stores the data in your contacts, so if you didn't put your contacts back on the phone when you reinstalled PkgBackup, it won't work.
