I know there are different solution to the SSD upgrade issue in the MBA line but since this is my son's computer I would like it to run smooth and not facing issues with, say, adaptors, kernel panics etc etc

Out of the box seems like the JetDrive being the smoothest solution (I gotta admit I didn't really look much to alternative solutions if not by reading some threads over here), still pricey even tho much less than a year ago, here in Italy the 240GB is now below 140 euros which even tho reasonable is still a lot for such small upgrade but the base 128GB the 13" came with makes of it pretty unusable, imagine a 17 years old kid, he probably has more room on his mobile than on his laptop

Is there any other solution than the JetDrive series which is an easy plug and play which would not face any compatibility issue? I am ready to put a little more into it if I can get to the half terabyte milestone...

It’s not a jet drive, and pricey, but I’m happy with the Samsung t5 external ssd. It’s speed is close to the internal, and pretty small. And I sometimes have it hang off the side.

I play games off it.

I tried the adapter for nvme ssds, and they were just too hot and drained the party too much. I run the mac pretty heavily, and there were too many compromises.

^^^^Right, there are other threads that also list problems with OWC hardware. Would you be willing to take a chance? If you check out my posts in the thread, you'll see that I did and got burned.

@flowrider , sorry to hear about your bad experience with OWC. I guess the only other option that does not need an adapter would be Transcend?

I have an early 2015 Air and also wanted to increase its storage to at least 256 GB. I looked at OWC and, being in Canada with an unfavourable US exchange rate, I bought a Sintech adapter, Intel SSD, and have been very happy with the end result.
