JibJab Jr. Personalizes Storytelling On iPad

JibJab, the company behind the smash political parody This Land in 2004, has kept busy the past few years with more political videos and commercial work for various companies. With their latest product, the brothers behind JibJab, Gregg and Evan Spiridellis, are getting away from political satire and focusing on their kids.

The pair is introducing a new line of children's books exclusively on the iPad, in an app called JibJab Jr. Books. The company uses its Starring You technology with the camera built-in to the iPad 2 to put children in the story as the main character.

The app includes one free book, The Biggest Pizza Ever, and a second one available for in-app purchase for $7.99. JibJab aims to have a new book out once a month. For frequent purchasers, the app has a $3.99/month subscription option which gives access to all new titles as they are released.

JibJab Jr. is free on the App Store for the iPad 2 (because it requires a camera to tell the story properly). Additional titles are $7.99 via in-app purchase, or a $3.99 monthly subscription for new titles as they are released. [iTunes]

Nice idea but it's also being done by Kidztory who have 2 you're-in-the-story apps, including one with face warping launched ages ago.

Just downloaded it and gave it a shot. It's too cute for words. Kids will love this sort of thing, and while it's been done before, and will be done again, I think the JibJab guys execute this concept best.

Not to mention, with my Italian family, the free book is going to be popular. My young relatives will have a blast with this.

Sure, the concept isn't new. I have a "insert your baby's picture" board book (that currently doesn't have a picture in it so all the babies look like faceless monsters.) But come on, Jib Jab are masters at it. The whole thing is dripping with style. My daughter is going to FLIP when I read her a story tonight.

One problem: I can't find a way to get rid of a previous facial image you tried using, other than deleting the app and reinstalling it. My dumb mistake - I figured it out.
