He was my favorite writer. I started with Dalva, back in the 90s, and then read his earlier stuff and haven't missed a fiction book. I haven't read all his poetry, though.

People seem to be talking about him as this bigger-than-life hard-ass tough guy. In many ways he was, I suppose, but he was capable of great wit, nuance, and subtlety. I was fond of his not-a-lot-of-punctuation style, which wasn't for everyone.
