I don't think everyone knew him by name, but he was definitely one of those actors where a lot of people would go, "Oh! I've seen that guy before. I like him." And there's nothing wrong with that.

My gosh, I must have seen him dozens of times in various TV series and movies growing up.

Of course the role I remember him most for was from "Black Christmas"...particularly the scene where a clueless cop recites the phone number Margot Kidder gave him, FEllatio 5-9925 (or something like that), while Saxon and the others cops crack up.
