My jailbroken 3GS works flawlessly and I am very happy with it. However, I am being lured in like a big fat fish to the iphone 4.

I just reserved one for my wife and I know having one in the house won't help matters.

The only thing holding me back at this point is all of the great Cydia apps: 3g unrestrictor, backgrounder, Five columns, kirake, SBSettings, etc.

how long do you think I'll have to wait for the same functionality on the new iphone?

Well if I wanted answers to this, I would read the iOS4 compatibility thread....

SBSettings is working and maybe unrestrictor. The rest will all come along shortly. It is like this everytime a major new firmware comes out.

I read the thread. These are some of the apps I would have to give up.

Not Compatible:

3G Unrestrictor
Backgrounder
Cydelete (doesn't work, causes Settings to crash)
Cyntact (causes safe mode on start)
Element
Five Icon Dock
GV Mobile
iBlacklist
InfiniDock (causes safe mode on start)
InfiniBoard
LockInfo
Lock(Info) Weather
Mobile Terminal (crashes to SB)
Music Controls (settings panel will not load, cannot be invoked)
MyWi
OverBoard (crashes to safe mode)
Popup Blocker
Qik (Cydia version) installed via .deb
Shrink
Six Icon Dock
StatusNotifier (crashes SB)
WeatherIcon (crashes SB)
Winterboard

Looks like most things that use MobileSubstrate will not work.

Basically, my question is how long (typically) does it take for the community to catch up to a new OS?

That sucks, because I have a lot of those apps, but I think it won't be more than a few weeks untill the devs get everything updated. Deffinatly worth it. There will probably be a few more sweet apps that the devs will be able to create with some of the new features!

Each developer is different. In some cases, the developer may have abandoned the app (usually the free apps) There is no correct answer to your question.
