That's because there is no real "marketing" scheme for iPhone 3GS, they didn't really make any significant changes to warrant 3-5 weeks of advertising.
And with the Pre coming out I imagine Apple wanted to get the phone out the doors pretty quickly.
Technically Apple contradicted themselves when they said 3.0 would be available this summer. June 21st is the start of summer (US). iPhone OS 3.0 is released June 17th.

3.0 comes out 17th, not 19th
Yes, they are releasing it 2 days early for the 3g's to upgrade. Probably to avoid the mass chaos of people upgrading, signing new contracts, and existing users trying to install new firmware.
So I am kind of bored so I just wanted to bring up the fact that the new iphone is coming out before July. It's funny how a bunch of people thought it was in no way coming out in June.
Well I'd rather point out all the people that thought AT&T would allow them to upgrade because they have an iPhone...
I'm not complaining, the earlier the better.

July 17 made sense to me based on past experience, but I'm glad we were all wrong. Though it could have been the actual date, and then was changed at the last minute. Might have been to allow more time for AT&T to complete their network upgrades and enable MMS, but then AT&T came back and said "we won't be done that soon" so Apple said "F it" and released without them.
