I'm not the first to ask, but just wanted to gather some opinions.

Currently running Sierra 10.12.6 on a 2015 15" rMBP. Everything is as it should be. Smooth, responsive, fast enough...

I have read some of the nightmares people are experiencing on High Sierra 10.13. But I am getting itchy fingers and wanting to upgrade...

Is it as bad as I am led to believe. How is your milage with it?

I'm also curious. More specifically, wondering if the issues with external drives have been ironed out. I'm currently installing it on my rMB which is essentially a spare machine before I install it on either of my necessary MacBook Pros that I use for work to try it out. Based on browsing the forum here, it appears a lot of the issues are resolved, so I'm thinking it's a little safer now. But still unsure mostly due to the file system change.

I was afraid to jump on board until 10.13.1 was released. However I decided to install HS only for testing on a harddisk. I don't want my SSD to be converted to APFS yet. I am running it on a Mac Pro 5,1 however I still use El Capitan for most of the time. Firefox can't read pdfs: they are black in HS and my Canon Pixma scanner doesn't work. I also have some troubles with Office 2011 when I use complex documents with plenty of images and equations. Otherwise HS is fine, but I don't see any improvement over Sierra.
