Just a few mail ?s

Okay so I set up my Gmail account on apple's mail program through imap. How do I get it stop showing like 3 deleted messages mailboxes. I just need 1. I only have one account on there. Also, does mail check for new messages when it is quit or does it have to be on all the time?

My mailbox behavior settings are as follows:
Drafts are stored on server
Notes are in inbox
Sent messages are NOT stored on server
Junk messages are NOT stored on server
Trash: Deleted mesages are NOT moved to the trash mailbox
Deleted messages are stored on server
