I just bought a 3GS, when I put my sim card in it wants my me to activate it on itunes.

I don't have the SHSH or anything, but it's on the oldboot rom. Anyway I can activate it, and not use 4.0 OS? Or anyway to use 4.0 and jailbrake without SHSH?

Thanks

You know it's the old bootrom for sure? If so, two paths:

- If you're on a Mac, use Pwnagetool, released by the Dev Team. (google it.) You can make a custom restore and use that, tell it to hacktivate for iphone as well, and that works well.

- If you're on a PC, you can use sn0wbreeze to do basically the same thing. I don't know the method used here.

Also note that you must be on 3.1.2 WITH a jailbreak to do this, so if you are, good, if not and you somehow do have your device's SHSH for 3.1.2 on Saurik's server, you can restore to that version, jailbreak that, then do either of the methods up there. What's the current iOS version, if basically what we're asking.

No, actually, it does affect even the Jailbreak. If you have an old bootrom, that means your jailbreak can be untethered. If it's the new bootrom, you might end up with a jailbreak that can only be tethered, or no jailbreak at all depending on the iOS you want to jailbreak. What you are probably refering to is the baseband, which is what needs to be hacked in order for the iphone to be unlocked. At this point, all basebands are unlockable thanks to ultrasn0w.

The bootrom is irrelevant if you only want to jailbreak.
It only comes into play if you want to unlock it.

Wat?

To quote the dev team: "iPhone 3GS

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom."

For unlocking... yes.
For Jailbreaking.. you can use Spirit.

Now if you're talking about iOS4, yes, there are some limitations.

Well that's just the complete opposite of the truth.

Ultrasn0w doesn't care what bootrom you have. As long as you're jailbroken.

OP, what version of iPhone OS is on the phone right now?

Thats the big question right there?
If its already on 4.0 and it doesnt have SHSH's saved your SOL.
Let us know whats up.
Do you know if its JB before and if the previous owner had its SHSH saved on cydia?

It's on 4.0 already, and the phone has never been JB.
