I just bought the retina display macbook pro, I am also new to the all mac thing.
So can anyone give me advice on and update software I should install? Also any apps recommended? Thanks!

This forum will probably be a great use to you if you're learning how to use OS X. There are a bunch of guides at the top (above the threads) including Mac Beginners Guide. There is also Apple's MacBook Pro support page with plenty of information.

Buy and install Apps for something you need, not for something you think you need. What do you use your computer for?

My advice would be to install software when you need it. For example, all of a sudden you want to take notes better. Search here and you find Evernote! Something like that.
