I got my wife a Series 3 Apple Watch two weeks ago.

I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are on what will happen at the next Apple event, presumably in September.

Will Series 5 take the place of Series 3 in the line up?
Will Series 5 be discontinued and Series 3 get a price reduction?

I’d say you should consider returning series 3. It will probably stop receiving watchOS update in a year or two and feature disparity between series 3 and 6 will start to show up. I personally think having a series 4 is better than having a series 3, although we all know series 4 is no longer sold directly by Apple.

I just upgraded to the Series 3 this past year and I don't see anything that would make me upgrade any time soon. As far as the watch goes, I am Ok being 2-3 versions behind.

That was a ‘bad buy‘ with the Series 3 at this Junction with the keynote literally within weeks. If you Have the ability To return, I would suggest returning it. With Apple restructuring their Apple Watch lineup, the Series 4 will likely make a return with an upgraded chip, comparatively to what we saw the Series 1 following the first Gen watch. Plus, with watchOS 7 verging, I wouldn’t trust the Series 3 Apple Watch performance at this point.

If the form factor stays the same for AW 6, they may not bring back the 4 since they would have the same form factor.

There’s absolutely nothing indicating a form factor change for the Series 6. And I mean nothing, given the Apple Watch doesn’t change transitions usually about every three years.

Then I doubt AW 4 will make an appearance in the next lineup due to it being the same form factor as AW 6. Maybe they'll upgrade the CPU for AW 3 and continue to sell that.
