I had my iMac always on while I was changing and was wondering if you guys think I’m at risk of hackers watching me or even recording me ?I sound paranoid but things like these really stress me out btw (there was no green light on). SO I go check around.

Some comments :

"While the indicator light can alert you to a webcam hack, it’s not always reliable. There are some advanced attacks that can take over your laptop’s camera without the light even blinking.

Why is my camera light on? In theory, the indicator light should be hardwired to turn on when the camera starts recording. However, whether or not the light switches on really comes down to the device’s firmware. And unfortunately, firmware can be overridden. Researchers proved it back in 2013, when they managed to hack a MacBook camera without the LED light ever coming on."

" The camera (in newer models) is hardwired so a green light will go on when the camera is in use, so from the perspective, as long as you are paying attention, you should be aware when you camera is on. The other side is that malware can still be installed on a MAC to control the camera, so if you are not paying attention or ignore the green light, the camera can be used to spy on you. Let's say you are away from your computer and you left it open, logged in and running. So from that perspective, a physical camera cover can be beneficial."

For me i never cover my iMac webcam. I know some will comment , since you worry just cover it than. Well I only just curious on technical part here just curious. I not worry even hacker managed to remote on my iMac webcam since I just a normal person Not a big influence or even an ultra rich well known person. Even they leak , they don't gain any money back since i not famous .

no, modern Macs it isn't gonna happen. and apps can only access the camera if you've given permission through privacy settings also.

how about someone accidentally download a malware, which hacker can remote control your iMac? Sorry asking some " noob question " as i not tactically expert in cyber security stuffs.

remote control can't approve the privacy prompts. also remote control needs to be approved in privacy settings too :p

it'll always turn on the camera light though.

hmm, sorry as mention I curious. So may ask some stupid question. I referring let's say when one accidentally download malware , hackers can remote control that person iMac. Thus isn't possible to remote turn on the webcam even need to approve in privacy settings because they already have control of your iMac and just allow from their side. I do happen watch some folks who are expert in cyber security managed to hack scammer computer and remote control their webcam even CCTV to expose them.
