I just dropped my phone and the case I have is still in perfect condition. The actual phone however has shattered. Wtaf? How does that even happen?

I was using the clear ribbed speck case and am using the iPhone 13 Pro.

A real case needs to have at least two layers of material for any drop protection. Look at what a bicycle or motorcycle helmet has: hard outer later with a soft inner layer. You need the same thing for an iPhone.

Those colorful or clear silicone/TPU cases are only for show. They're completely useless for drop protection.

No case is gonna guarantee your phone will not break if dropped. It's just a matter of luck how it fell and where it hit. You also didn't tell us how high, where you dropped it and at what angle is landed at. Those might help why your phone didn't survive.

It is these glass backs that are part of the problem. I dropped my original generation iPhone SE (no case) numerous times on diifferent surfaces. No damage at all. That was a properly designed and made phone.

Sorry to hear about your iPhone. At least you can get the glass replaced, and hopefully will be good as new. Although the materials that Apple uses have improved over the years, there is a compromise between scratch protection and drop (shatter) protection. Even a decent Silicone case will give you some protection. It's still a case of luck (or lack of) when you drop your phone. The angle and point of impact, distance and type of case will all be a factor. With current iPhones is possible to drop an iPhone at waist height onto a hard surface with no case and it may not shatter. So you have been unlucky this time. However as @JPack has said you can use better cases to protect your phone to increase its chance of survival.

dropped it from about 3 feet high. It landed on the back on to concrete. the funny thing is it was in an otter box case up until the day before :(

It happens, man. My 12Pro shattered from a similar height onto marble from my nightstand. It survived drops on asphalt. If you have apple care its going to be $29 which is cheap

If you do not have insurance, and are not getting it repaired, I’d suggest putting a skin on the back of the phone to prevent dust and moisture from getting inside the unit. Something is better than nothing

Sorry to hear- My daughter shattered her back glass as well, and it was inside the official Apple case and all.

$450 to replace just the back on the 13, the pro might be cheaper as the 13 houses the motherboard and whatnot on the back panel. I opted to just swap out the entire phone

I ended up getting it repaired from a Chinese kiosk at the mall. $240 aud (I’m in Australia) later and it looks brand new but the tech proudly told me that shes lost “only” one magnet for my MagSafe 🫣.
It looks brand new and still works so I’m happy, and it’s back to an otterbox case for me.
