Just got a 1TB external drive for my late 2013 MBPr, how do I encrypt it?

I want to use it for Time Machine then encrypt the whole device.

It is a Western Digital 1 Terabyte external hard drive.

Connect the drive to the Mac. Go to Disk Utility and format the drive Journaled extended GUID. If that has already been done, once you connect the drive to the Mac for the first time, Time Machine should pop up asking you if you want to use the drive for Time Machine backups. Click yes. You will see a small option box for encrypting the backup.
