High performance laptop computing on Mac OS X is covered by my ridiculously snappy and not super hot G4/1.42GHz. Older OSes are covered by the Lombard I'm planning on dual booting 8.1 and X DP2 on. Does the 900MHz G3 even have a role now besides the WiFi to Ethernet router duty I've already had it on? Programs that specifically demand 8.6+? Probably, which on further reflection is probably going to be my justification. I love the 14" iBook form factor, that's why I have two of them now; it fits my lap perfectly, my eyes appreciate the larger screen, and I really don't mind the extra weight. Plus, it looks really pretty.

I won't be getting rid of it -- both for sentimental value (as it's the first Mac I've ever owned) and because I would like to keep it around just to have it. Just wondering if it has any special role it could fill so as to keep it busy and not just have it sit around collecting dust.

As you possibly know, the Lombard doesn't officially run 8.1 but can be coaxed to. :)

I'd probably dedicate that one to 9.2.2 and versions of OS X older than Tiger.
I've never tried 8.6 on a white iBook G3. If you do, please report your findings. :)
