Hi Everyone,

Been years since I've posted here but its great to be back! I just picked up a 16" MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago and its an amazing machine so far! My last Mac that I owned was a 15" MacBook Pro 2014 model which had the Staingate (anti coating came off), which I had the screen replaced free from Apple then I sold it on eBay. Been away from Macs since.

Anyway, today after using the 16" MacBook Pro in clamshell mode all day for work, I opened it up and found a smudge in the center of the screen (looks like keyboard mark) but it wiped off very easily.

Do you guys think the Staingate is still around for the 2019 models?

I think what you describe is different than Staingate. 2018 and newer models haven't been added to Apple's repair program.

I hope so, it really gave me some anxiety about owning MacBooks after the Staingate on my 15" MacBook Pro. But I missed using MacOS so much I had to return. I'll take the chance I guess, if it returns I'll just get the screen replaced, hopefully it doesn't affect the 2019 models so much.

I have just cleaned the screen on my 2019 MacBook pro 16 and noticed some spots, and I am sure that its the dreaded staingate. Apart from the spots not cleaning off, I can feel the pitting as I ran my finger over the marks. I contacted Apple about this and they have asked me to book an appointment with a certified service agent. Because of lockdown in the UK I am unable to travel and the store is closed anyway but they will collect it. I am told that if I don't get the MBP looked at before the warranty ends then it will not be extended due to the covid lockdown. Thats disgusting, its not my fault we are locked in our homes and all the stores are closed.

So staingate still exists, even in the latest models, time to move on I think, I had it with a previous MBP 2013 13 inch TWICE and the screen was replaced both times. I must be very unlucky with this.

It's probably just residue from your fingers that got onto the screen. The screen size is 16", it's hard to keep it clear of all the debris, food, even sneezing and particles flying around.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. You'll know stagnate, and from what I've heard it usually starts on the side of the screen and after wiping off some of the coating.

The smudges could be from the keyboard when the lid is closed. Greasy fingerprints etc...The distance is very small and even small pressure applied to the top case while lid closed will bend the screen little bit...try it...you will see...some folks advice to use the supplied paper/cloth in between when you closing the lid

Yes, staingate exists on 16" models as well. You should use very thin cloth between keyboard and display.

But there grease marks makes "pitting" which harm display coating. I did't have something like that on several windows notebooks and did't put extra care about keyboard or display cleaning...

So maybe is not staingate but it has same "thin" display coating and very low space between keyboard and display...
Yes Apple put thicker coating than before, but didn't change design...

Had my 16" over a year now, I clean every week. No problems whatsoever.
and yeah I do believe that may Apple use a thicker coating on 2018+ models.

Nope, there is a dip in two of the marks where the AF coating has come off.
